Environmental Citizen Science in Conflict Zones

This event is a multidisciplinary discussion on the role of citizen-generated data and citizen science in environmental monitoring within conflict zones, with a particular focus on Ukraine after and during the Russian full-scale invasion. The event brings together perspectives from academic institutions, civil society organizations, policymakers, and Ukranian students to explore the legal and social dimensions of participatory research in this context. The conference is open to all, free of charge.

The conference will count with the participation of mroe4nature representatives:

  • Ivan Rusev will present one of the more4nature cases led by Coastwatch: “Nature Protection in War: National Park Tuzlivski lymany, Ukraine -Implementation and enforcement of nature and water law with Citizen Generated Data, past- now, and after the war ends”.
  • Oleg Pogrubnyj and Yevhen Bovsunovsky (NECU) will present a poster titled “Saving the forest together” about one of the more4nature follower cases led by NECU.

Other special speakers include representatives from UNEP, Pier Carlo Sandei, who will present the work of the Green Recovery Platform, and Jan Ortgies, from the Council of Europe, who will present The Registry for Damage for Ukraine.

The event is organized by GROMADA, an Erasmus+ funded EU project. The project is dedicated to strengthening cooperation among European universities to support public and legal capacity for post-war environmental recovery in Ukraine. Our initiative emphasises the legal aspects of environmental monitoring, aiming to empower conflict-affected communities through civic engagement and citizen science.
